Now You Can Imagine Sailing With The Rich & Famous On The Friendship
Just relax in your favourite chair with your preferred tipple. Have some calming, tranquil music playing in the background, and cast your eyes over the exquisite model of The Schooner named “Friendship”.
Friendship was designed by William Fyffe, the famous yacht designer, and he set about building her in 1922.
It was before the days of the carbon fibre racers and the need to be super fast so that you could compete in the America’s cup. In those days ships and cruisers were built of mahogany, solid sturdy and elegant, able to deal with all kinds of weather.
Friendship had a classic cockpit, bronze portholes and fittings, and a sumptuous galley, she was one of the most elegant and nostalgic cruisers of the 1930`s.
Friendship started her life as the “Malabar,” cruising around the Mediterranean from Spain to Italy, Greece and beyond.
In the mid 1950`s she changed hands and was christened “Friendship” it was then when her illustrious career began.
Based at Palma de Mallorca, a millionaire’s paradise on an Island off the coast of Spain, Friendship courted the rich and famous. She carried Film stars, sports personalities, and politicians. Often sailing in company with Errol Flynn’s schooner “Zaca”.
If you were a fly on the wall of The Schooner Friendship in those heady years, many a book could be written (and sold).
For another 20yrs Friendship sailed around the Mediterranean with her distinguished celebrities, then in 1970 she changed character once again and became a charter yacht in the Caribbean.
In the late 1980`s disaster struck. Friendship struck a coral reef off the Caribbean coast. She had a glorious 70 years of sailing and never had a humdrum day in her existence.
